I'm Not Where I Thought I'd Be by Now
There comes a point in life when you sit with yourself and realize that things aren't turning out the way you imagined they would. You remember the person you thought you'd be by now, the things you thought you'd have figured out, the goals you were certain you'd have achieved, and the life you pictured yourself living. Then you look at your reality, and somewhere between those two versions of your life, you feel a little disappointed. Not necessarily because your life is terrible, but because you genuinely thought you'd be further along by now.
It's a strange feeling, watching time pass while feeling like you're standing in the same place. You try, you apply, you show up, you make plans, and you hope that eventually something will work out. But sometimes, despite everything you do, the results don't come when you expect them to. You watch other people get the opportunities you've been praying for, celebrate milestones you've been working towards, and live lives that look like the very things you've been hoping for yourself. And even when you're genuinely happy for them, a small part of you can't help but wonder, When will it be my turn?
Nobody really prepares you for that feeling. The embarrassment of still figuring things out when you thought you'd have your life together by now. The exhaustion of having to keep trying when you're tired of starting over. The quiet fear that maybe you're doing something wrong, that maybe you're not good enough, or that somehow life is moving forward without you. You don't always talk about it because you know you're supposed to be grateful for what you have, but gratitude doesn't erase disappointment. You can appreciate where you are and still wish you were somewhere else.
And perhaps the hardest part is grieving a life that never actually happened. The version of yourself you imagined. The plans that didn't work out. The opportunities you thought would change everything. The belief that by a certain age, you'd finally feel settled, secure, and sure of yourself. Nobody died, nothing necessarily fell apart, and yet there's still something to mourn: the expectations you carried for your life and the realization that things might take much longer than you anticipated.
But maybe we put too much pressure on ourselves to have everything figured out by a certain age. We create these invisible deadlines and then punish ourselves when life doesn't meet them. We forget that there are circumstances beyond our control, that some opportunities take longer to find us, and that some journeys require us to become people we haven't learned how to be yet. We compare our behind-the-scenes struggles to other people's visible achievements and somehow convince ourselves that we're falling behind.
The truth is, you can be trying your hardest and still find yourself in a season of uncertainty. You can have good intentions, work hard, and do everything you know how to do, yet still not have the answers you need. That doesn't automatically mean you're failing. Sometimes you're simply living through a part of life that doesn't offer immediate results, clear directions, or guarantees.
Maybe the goal isn't to convince yourself that everything is happening exactly as it should. Maybe the goal is to stop treating your current circumstances as proof that you've failed. You are allowed to be disappointed without deciding that your future is hopeless. You are allowed to feel behind without believing that your life is over. And you are allowed to change direction, start again, or admit that the life you once imagined might look different from the one you're building now.
So, if you're reading this and quietly wondering why you're not where you thought you'd be by now, I hope you give yourself a little grace. You don't have to pretend that the waiting doesn't hurt. You don't have to force yourself to be positive every day. But please don't mistake the fact that you haven't arrived for proof that you'll never get there.
Maybe you're still figuring it out. Maybe you're starting over. Maybe you're trying to find your footing in a world that doesn't seem to slow down for anyone. Wherever you are, your life is still happening. Not just in the moments when you achieve something, get the job, make the money, find love, or finally become the person you imagined. It's happening right here, in the uncertainty, the trying, the learning, and the days when getting up and trying again is the only victory you have.
You may not be where you thought you'd be by now, but please don't let disappointment convince you that there's nowhere left for you to go.
